Different Methods of Madison Radon Mitigation
Block Wall DepressurizationIf radon gas is detected in excess of 4 pCi/L the EPA and Surgeon General suggest that you properly mitigate your home. Interestingly enough, the World Health Organization sets this "actionable level" at 2.7 pCi/L. One of the ways we mitigate radon in Madison is through block wall depressurization. During this method, a pipe is inserted in the block cavity. This pipe is then attached to the piping system that connects to the fan and other parts of the Radon Mitigation System. This mitigation method is usually used in homes that have moderate to high levels of radon gas and hollow block foundation walls. This technique depressurizes the voids that are within the concrete blocks by drawing the air from inside the wall and venting it outside. This method is often combined with sub slab depressurization for the best results.
|
Sub Slab DepressurizationThis is one of the most common methods of radon mitigation in Madison. This method helps reduce the air pressure that is below the concrete floor slab. This is done by using pipe vents that are powered by fans. The fans draw air from below the slabs. Negative pressure under the floor is created by this action. This then draws the soil gases from beneath the foundation and vents them above the roofline at the proper EPA suggested height. In addition to this process, the wall and floor cracks must be sealed. This method also requires that a sump pump pit is also sealed. Radon Gas always finds the path of least resistance so by sealing these areas a vacuum is created and therefore allows for the gas to be pulled and properly mitigated by the fans. This makes it one of the most reliable ways to mitigate radon from your home.

Crawl Space DepressurizationCrawl space systems can be some of the most costly systems as they require more time and labor. In this radon mitigation method, the air space in the crawl space is reduced. A poly sheet is laid over the floor of the crawl space and it is sealed to the foundation walls as well as any penetrations. A PVC pipe is connected to the sheet as well as to the fan either outside or in the attic above the crawlspace or home. The radon gas is then pulled from beneath the sheet and vented above the gutter line at the proper EPA recommended level. Similar to the other radon mitigation methods aforementioned, this process is done by using a venting system that is powered by a proper radon mitigation fan. This helps draw air efficiently and effectively from beneath the sheet in the crawl space.
|
Sump Pit Radon MitigationThis method is sometimes used when home or property owners have a submersible sump pump. The radon technician will properly seal off the sump pit and any necessary cracks in the floor. This helps create a vacuum in the drainage and sump pump systems and allows for the radon fan and radon venting system to properly pull the radon gas from within that system. As previously mentioned, since radon gas finds the path of least resistance, the gas may concentrate and work its way through this drainage system. B0th this method and certain sub slab depressurization methods act very similarly in the way the radon gas is extracted. However, when older homes that do not have a sump pump or drainage system are mitigated using the sub slab method, the process is drastically different.

Madison Radon Testing
Radon is a radioactive, naturally occurring gas that gets into your home through the smallest of gaps or cracks in the floors and walls. Radon gas has been linked to lung cancer in numerous scientific studies. Radon testing is the only sure way to know whether the radon gas levels are elevated in your home and can cause problems to your health or property value. The EPA recommends regular testing and inspection and testing is extremely important anywhere in Wisconsin but particularly if you own a home in the Madison area. There is no need to panic if the test results show elevated radon levels. Properly licensed and insured radon mitigators can effectively mitigate the radon gas from your home in a matter of hours. Moreover, before you choose to buy or sell your home, it is best to get it tested for radon gas. If you are a seller this can make your home more appealing to buyers and if you are a buyer you can have complete peace of mind knowing that the levels are within the actionable limits.
