Radon Mitigation

Radon mitigation in Sheboygan is a common home repair for both homeowners and home sellers alike.  Most folks discover that they have high radon gas levels during the home inspection process of a real estate transaction.  Once the elevated levels of radon gas are detected within the structure, the most common way of addressing the issue is installing a radon mitigation system (also known as a sub-slab depressurization system).  The radon mitigation process, or sub-slab depressurization process, is the process of sealing the area beneath the slab of a structure so a proper radon mitigation fan can be used to redirect the radon gas from beneath the slab to the EPA suggested height above the roofline.  The radon mitigation process greatly reduces the amount of radon gas that concentrates within a home because it redirects the radon gas before it ever enters the home.

Radon Testing

Radon testing is the process of testing a home or commercial structure for elevated levels of radon gas.  There are many different ways to test for radon, however most folks prefer continuous electronic monitor radon testing.  Continuous electronic monitor radon testing is also the most commonly used radon testing method in real estate transactions.  The reason electronic monitor radon testing is so widely preferred is the results are available immediately after the test is completed and the results are also shown as both an overall average as well as an hour-by-hour average.  The extra data provided as well as the timeliness of the electronic monitor results ensure that you have both accurate results and speedy results for real estate closings.  In addition to electronic monitor radon testing, we also offer long-term radon tests and charcoal radon testing kits for our perspective customers.

Radon Abatement

Sometimes the words radon mitigation and radon abatement are used interchangeably.  The process of radon mitigation or removing radon from a structure can be done many different ways.  Radon mitigation in Sheboygan is generally done by either sub-slab depressurization or drain-tile depressurization depending on how old the home is and the construction of the basement.  Many homes in Sheboygan have sub-slab interior drain-tile systems while some older homes do not.  If the home has a sump pump and sump crock connected to the drain-tile system we can depressurize the slab and draw out the radon gas. We do so by sealing the sump crock and tapping into either the sump crock itself or the drain-tile system to draw the radon into the piping and remove it from beneath the slab before it ever enters the home in the first place.  This is very effective because the drain-tile system generally spans the entire exterior footprint of the basement allowing for maximum field extension and suction under the home.

However, if the home does not have drain-tile, we have to create a sub-slab depressurization system.  We create this sub-slab depressurization system by coring a hole in the slab and digging out a cavity beneath the slab where we can get good suction to draw the radon from the soil and cracks in the sub-slab material.  Generally, the radon mitigation technician will remove about a 5 gallon bucket of sub-slab material to create a large enough suction pit for the system to operate correctly.  Whether your home has a drain-tile system or it needs a sub-slab depressurization system, our radon mitigation professionals can properly mitigate to ensure that harmful radon gas is not entering your home in excessive concentrations.

High Radon Levels in Sheboygan

According to the EPA, the vast majority of Wisconsin is at a moderate to high risk for elevated levels of radon gas.  During our 20 years in business we have seen levels ranging from well below 4.0 pCi/L to over 180 pCi/L in different areas of Wisconsin.  Many areas in Sheboygan County have tested high for radon gas, however, regardless of whether your neighbors or area have a reputation for high levels of radon, the EPA and Surgeon General suggest you test your home.  Many times, one home can have high levels and the home next to it can have low levels.  There are many different factors determining this including how energy efficient your home is, the type of air exchange, the aggregate beneath the home, the location of the radon source beneath the home, and many other factors both known and unknown.  Therefore, it is important to test your home for radon gas every 2 years no matter what.  We offer a wide range of radon testing services as well as radon mitigation services in Sheboygan.  Contact us today for more information on high radon levels in your area!
